INGREDIENTS
- pasta (whatever you prefer, I used penne)

Lipstick Swatches!! - Mommy Beauty

Evening ladies!! This week's inspiration comes from a few days of testing out new make up and beauty products.  I've been slowly cleaning out my vanity and replacing most of my make up with new, more "mommy friendly" shades and colours.  I have a good mix of everyday and evening looks that are both versatile and stylish but again, doesn't scream out "hey I'm 30 trying to look like I'm 19 again!!".

I love making myself up once in a while, even as a little girl, I would always play with my mom's lipsticks and eyeshadows.  As a teenager, i experimented with alot of different looks and cleaning out my make up drawer brought back memories of bold colours and questionable styles, haha.

Shortly after becoming a mom, I stopped wearing make up as I stopped thinking about taking care of myself obviously.  And when I did start wearing make up again, the colours that I had at the time just didn't work for me anymore.  I didn't want to look like I was about to walk into a night club while grocery shopping with my 9 month old.  So I read up on some mommy blogs, watched a few youtube videos and burned some plastic in the make up section.

I asked a few of my mommy friends what they find challenging when it comes to cosmetics and choosing lipstick colours is usually one of the hardest.  I recently purchased a few lipsticks that I thought were mommy friendly but also had a bit of glam.

Depending on your style, choose nudes or neutrals for day time and rich deep colours for evening wear.  Also depending on what you prefer, you can choose regular or matte, sheer or opaque. For my skin and hair colour and style, I chose a lot of nudes, mauves, deep plum shades, and of course the classic red.  I wear both glossy and matte depending on the occasion, I prefer matte if I want the colour to last the whole day with very little to no reapplying.

Below are swatches for both my day and evening wear.  I've also included my favourite lip liner and glosses.

DAY WEAR

These are my favourite day time neutral colours.  It looks good dressed up or down.  I dont use lip gloss for these colours as they are already shiny.  I do use a nude lipliner with it to prevent the lipstick from bleeding outside of the lip lines. Throughout a 6-8 hour day of errands, eating, drinking, etc.  I reapply once or twice.

Femme Couture Shiny Color Crayon in "Barely Blushing" - Sally Beauty Supply

Revlon Super Lustrous in "651 Porcelain Pink" - drugstore

Cover Girl Lip Perfection in "200 Sultry"

EVENING WEAR

These are really fun colours and perfect for a girls night out or a fancy dinner date with the hubby.  I wore all the colours with gloss to make the colours pop in the photos, some colours I do wear just by itself to keep it more subtle.  For lipsticks I want to wear with no gloss, I choose the ones that are moisturizing and apply smooth.

Maybelline Color Sensational in "440 Mauve It Up"

Wet and Wild in "514A Cherry Frost"

Cover Girl LipPerfection The Shades from Pat McGrath Collection in "335 Embrace"

Cover Girl LipPerfection The Shades from Pat McGrath Collection in "360 Euphoria"

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Collection in "865 Fuchsia Flash" - drugstore

Maybelline Color Sensational in "160 Fifth Ave. Fuchsia" - drugstore

GLOSSES & LINERS

Depending on how bold or subtle you want your lips to be, choosing the right gloss and liner will help you achieve the look you are going for.  You can wear a lipstick by itself, as long as it's moisturizing, or else your lips will chap and peel (not attractive at all!!).  Best bet is to buy an actual matte lipstick, it will keep your lip colour subtle and it will last longer. Or get lip stains which are a cross between lipsticks and lip gloss.

For everyday wear, I use a nude lip liner and a clear gloss for my neutral lip colours.  The one I use is a lip liner pencil by Beautique in "Natural" from Sally Beauty Supply and a regular clear gloss by Bonne Belle.

For evening wear I also use Beautique lip liners to match my lipstick shade.  To keep it simple and easy, I buy 2 standard colours of tinted gloss to match my lip colours (light pink/peachy tint for the pinks and mauves, a deep red colour for the darker shades).  I do the same for lip liners (seen above).  I find that tinted lip glosses make the lip colour really pop out compared to just the clear gloss.

So to my fab mamas out there looking for a fresh new look, take a look at your make up collection and see what you can still work with or get rid of.  Or if you want a full revamp, head out there and splurge on some new make up, you deserve it!!

What's In My Diaper Bag? - MY ESSENTIALS

Sup Mamas!!

My current obsession has been watching and reading about people's top favourites and hauls, mostly on You Tube.  I've discovered many cool and interesting products and it's always fun to hear others' opinions on these products as well.  This has inspired me to do my first of many favourites and hauls blogs (maybe I should start a You Tube channel HA!)

For any of you that are new parents and are looking for a list of basic things to have in your diaper bag, I hope you find this helpful.  These items have been my saving grace (and still are) for the past 2 years.

(I've included the links below for the products featured on this blog)

1.) It's all in the bag :)

Skip Hop Dash Bag (Crocodile or online store)

My fave bag and brand is Skip Hop. They have a ton of cute styles, it's good quality, and I absolutely love the pockets and storage.  This has lasted me 2 years and I still use it to this day especially when travelling.

Why I love it:
- LOTS of pockets inside and out
- comes with a waterproof changing mat
- adjustable shoulder strap
- has a stroller handle straps so it can buckle onto your stroller
- unisex style, i love how it doesn't look like the big and bulky diapers bags that my mom used back in the day.  Even the hubby found it comfortable to carry around, he just wore it as a cross body bag.
- travel friendly as it carries a lot of stuff but very compact
- made with heavy duty canvas material so it can withstand everyday use

Fossil, Aldo

On certain days when I want to look a bit stylish, I use oversized purses as diaper bags.  These work fine if Jonathan and I go to the store or run errands. He doesn't need much if we're only out for a couple of hours so I just throw everything in my purse.  There are actual diaper bags out there that look like designer purses, I personally just use one of my larger bags.  This also avoids having to carry 2 bags, which is a hassle when we're constantly in and out of the car.

2.) The Essentials

Honest Co. Eco Friendly Diapers (online)

Lots of diapers.  You know how often you have to change your baby so prepare accordingly.  For a day trip I bring about a dozen, for a couple of hours of errands I pack about 6.

Honest Co. Eco Friendly Wipes (online)

Huggies wipes (I like the colours of their containers)

Travel wipes.  You can buy individual travel size ones or use the travel case that you can just refill.  I also keep a pack in my car, as mentioned in a past blog, baby wipes cleans anything off everything.  It's very handy for all spills and messes while you're out.  I use unscented ones so it's not so irritating on the skin, especially during warm weather.

Travel size Vaseline (regular or baby, any drugstore)

Mini travel size bum cream :)  I use Vaseline for Jonathan because I can use it on all parts of the body, not just the bum.  Very good especially for travelling in hot weather and you want to prevent diaper rash.

Munchkin Snack Cup (Wal Mart), Skip Hop bottle (Crocodile)

Food and snacks in SPILL PROOF containers.  Enough said :)

2.) The Extras

Mini books, Cars (I found these at Costco in the US, I also bought a safari animals set from Winners)

iPad Mini (with a "toddler proof" protective case)

Toys, books, games/movies, etc.  I bring these when we go to doctor's appointments or if we are eating at a restaurant.  My little one gets bored quite easily and can get really antsy if he sits still for more than 30 min. (what 2 year old sits still for 2-3 hours?).  I love the mini books and you can fit a lot of them in your bag.

3.) Chocolate

Organic Milk Chocolate (London Drugs, comes in different varieties)

For mom....just because :)

As you can tell, I don't put much in my bag as I try to keep it simple and stick to the bare essentials.  I found that packing everything but the kitchen sink was unnecessary as I end up not using more than half of what I pack, especially during Jonathan's immobile days and I had to carry a large bulky bag in addition to a stroller, car seat, and him.

Alright!! My first "favorites" blog, done!! Hope you found this helpful or entertaining or both.  More to come :)

Weekly Meal Planning Made Easy!!

Evening ladies and gents!!

I've had a bit of a break from coaching this week so I had a lot of extra time to really get stuff done around the house.  If you follow me on Instagram (@wifey604), you know that I've been cooking up a storm this week and it inspired me to blog about meal planning.

As busy parents or busy people in general, we are all about everything that is fast and convenient, especially when it comes to our daily meals.  One of my biggest weaknesses is going out to eat, especially when I'm too tired to or lazy and just want someone else to cook me food.  This happened a lot after having Jonathan and was working full time in Vancouver (1 hour commute from home).  I was way too tired to cook dinner or prepare lunch to bring to work the next day.  Even the days when I wasn't tired, during the busy times of the year, I had to continue working when I came home.  So I always resorted to ordering food or eating out which , not only add up money wise, but start to become unhealthy as well as I wasn't exactly going for the healthy options on the menu (what better way to beat stress than with a burger and a beer at the local Cactus or extra whip cream on my morning Starbucks).

I wanted to get back into the habit of meal planning so I figured out a way that was simple, quick, and sustainable.  Before, I used to sit and think about what to make for the week, I spent hours online looking at recipes and making grocery lists.  But after baby, I found that method to be too time consuming and I was so annoyed by it, in the end I just gave up.

Once a week, usually on a Tuesday (the hubby and I have odd work hours, coach life!!)  I spend 2 hours total on grocery shopping and meal planning, that's it!! I am fortunate enough to have all the shops and markets I need all in the same shopping plaza so it's a one stop shop.  It may take a bit longer for some of you as you may have to do a bit of driving back and forth from market to market.  Or shorter if you buy everything in one grocery store.  I personally shop at butchers and farm markets as the meats and produce are always fresh (in particular, free range and organic at the places I go to).  I make a trip to Thrifty's or Whole Foods for the everyday staples (almond milk, eggs, bread, deli, etc.).

Here is my general outline for my weekly meal plan.  And in true Wifey fashion, in 4 easy steps!! :)

In order.....

1.) GRAB MEAT.
- Meridian meats is my fave place as they have custom made packs.  You just order over the phone and pick up after 2-3 days.  They carry good quality meat, all free range and grass fed.
- this is my go-to as the packages include all the meats (beef, pork, fish, poultry, breakfast meats) and it includes different cuts as well (ground, filet, steak, skinned, etc.)
- this is the base of my meal plan, having all the meats make it SO much easier to think of different recipes

2.) GRAB PRODUCE.
- I find that when I see the produce in front of me, I can come up with recipes alot easier.
- i also try not to buy the same produce as the week before, that is when things start to get boring and redundant.  If I have a few faves, I grab them anyway but i try to have some variety each week.
- so walk into the market and see what inspires you!!

3.) GRAB INGREDIENTS.
- by this point I have a good idea of what I'm going to make so i grab the rest of the ingredients needed as well as the usual daily staples at the grocery store.

4.) MAKE LIST.
- before, i started with making the list first and as I mentioned, it took me forever!! I've made it the last thing to do and it literally takes me about 10 minutes since all I have to do is quickly organize all my thoughts then write it down.
- I usually list 8 meals per week (1 extra just so I feel I have more options)
- i provided links to my favourite online recipes at the end of the blog!!

Tips for those On-The-Go:

- When cooking your meals, make enough so you have leftovers.  Perfect for lunch at work the next day.  (I did this alot when I worked full time, I didnt have time to think about what to pack for lunch, nor was I a fan lol).

- Invest in a slow cooker.  These are amazing for those who just want to sit and eat after coming home.  You just stick everything in the pot and turn it on when you leave for work.  When you come home, you'll have a nice hot meal ready.

- Freezing.  If you don't mind eating the same thing for 5 days, make a big batch and freeze in meal sized portions.  Take it to work with you or if you're having a lazy day, just heat up and go.  Or vary it up and make 2-3 different meals then freeze.  This definitely beats those frozen instant meals from the grocery store, cheaper and healthier too!!

This method has made my life easier when it came to preparing meals and has turned into something fun for me, and that's what is important!!  If it's not fun, you'll get tired of it and give up.  In the long run, it will save you money and at the same time, develop a healthy eating habit.  So head to your local markets and get crackin'!!  Get inspired and channel your inner Iron Chef.

Birthday Race Weekend!!

What a crazy weekend!! I celebrated turning 29 by starting out my race year with a bang.  Just like last year, my first races are Delta Triathlon and the Vancouver Sun Run, and 2 years in a row they've been back to back.  Crazy? Yes. Fun? YES!!

I will be blogging mostly about my tri race as the Sun Run was not a competitive event for me.  I did a 1:02 10k which is what I expected after pushing it the day before.

I started racing triathlons in 2009 thanks to my equally as crazy (if not more) hubby.  I had a strong swimming background so I decided to see if could complete a triathlon.  I originally wanted to try one but once I completed my first, I wanted to do more.  It was a lot of fun and definitely physically challenging as I was not a rider or a runner.  I ended up doing 5 triathlons that year and haven't stopped since (except for the 9 month baby break of course).

2014 DELTA TRIATHLON (Sprint Distance)

1:34.46 - Amazing race, I set a new PB and planning to destroy that time again next year!!
(2015 goal: Sub 1:30)........or maybe try an olympic distance race (double the distance).

Swim 600m - Slow and Steady
I wanted to save all of my energy and strength for the bike and run leg of the race so I was going at a medium hard pace.  I did a 12min 34 sec 600m which is actually pretty slow for me, I ended up drafting behind a guy (good news) but he was at a slower pace (bad news).  It would have been a waste of energy to pass him and pull away so I just stayed on his tail.

Bike 20km - Best bike split ever
T1 was pretty good, had to re-do my ponytail twice to fit my helmet but was out of there in 2 minutes.  It was 2 10k loops, the first loop was cold but felt good.  My legs felt great and I tackled 2 hills in a row with no struggle.  Second loop was still a bit cold but felt good, struggled up the last hill but I booked the last 5km to blast it on the run.  I ended up doing about a 51 minute 20km bike.

Run - Amazing and Painful
T2 was quick, I just wanted to finish the last leg and for all of it to be over!  Helmet off, bike shoes off, run shoes and sunglasses on, and off I go.  The first km was pretty much goofy legs and took me a bit to push through that feeling.  Once I hit the 2 and 3k mark, I was solid.  I could feel my body starting to anticipate the end of the race so I started to feel the previous bike ride, my quads and calves were definitely on fire.  I pushed through and got to the finish line with a 29 minute 5k (pretty damn painful but good for swimming more than half a kilometer and biking 20k with headwind immediately beforehand).

Overall I was happy with my race, final finish time and how I felt throughout.  I didn't check my watch too often during the race but I checked at my last 1km of the run and saw I was way ahead of my goal time.  That gave me a sudden rush of energy and I sprinted the last leg.  Very good race and a happy 29th birthday to me!! :)

My next triathlon race will be the Point Grey Triathlon in July....ish? We'll see how I do!!

Cheers,
<3

Juice It Up!!

I absolutely love juices and smoothies and it is one of the many things that helped me get back to my pre baby weight.  It's a quick and delicious way to get in your daily dose of fruits and vegetables.  They are very rich in fiber and perfect if you're not a big fan of veggies.  They work wonders as a natural detox and does an amazing job of cleansing your system.  It's also a great way to sneak veggies in your children's diet, my little one loves them!

You can pretty much throw anything in a smoothie and it's really easy to get creative with them.

I have 4 main components in all of my smoothies:

1.) 3 veggies
2.) 3 fruits
3.) A liquid base (I often use fresh squeezed orange juice, seen below)
4.) Protein powder (my family swears by Vega) or super seeds (hemp, chia, flax)

Plant based goodness.  Been using this for 3 years and we are hooked!!

Fresh squeezed, simply amazeballs.

My Smoothie/Juice essentials:

1.) A good blender - I use a large blender for multiple servings and my Magic Bullet for single servings (also great for on-the-go as I literally blend and go).

2.) Plastic tumblers with straws - if you need to take your smoothie on the go, a plastic tumbler with a  lid and straw is very handy (seen in pictures below).

3.) Hand juicer - a simple hand juicer is sufficient for my smoothies as I only use it to juice a couple of oranges and lemons.  The one I use is the OXO brand citrus juicer (seen above) which I bought from Kitchen Therapy.  It's super handy as it has 2 sizes of juicers (thingy in the middle is reversible) and has a strainer to catch the seeds and pulp.  I would then take all the pulp and add it in the blender (extra fiber!!)

4.) Stainless steel straws - I just recently discovered these and they are amazeballs (seen in photos above and below).  I drink smoothies daily and these are very eco-friendly compared to using disposable straws.  These were also purchased from Kitchen Therapy, it's a 4 pack and it came with a cleaning brush.

Below are my daily faves!! (I apologize in advance for the lack of creativity in the names)

Note: I don't use exact measurements for the ingredients so feel free to put as much or as little of everything, depending on the consistency you want and the number of servings.  I also use organic and vegan ingredients.

1.) GREEN

Veg: Spinach, cucumber, parsley, ginger, celery
Fruit: Apple, banana, lemon, shredded coconut
Base: Fresh squeezed orange juice or green tea
Seed: Ground flaxseed or hemp hearts

2.) TUTTI FRUITY
Veg: Spinach, cucumber, parsley
Fruit: Banana, mango, lemon, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries
Base: Fresh squeezed orange juice, pineapple juice or almond milk
Seed: Chia seeds
Powder: Vega in Chocolate flavor (half the scoop)

3.) SALAD IN A CUP
Veg: Spinach, kale, cucumber, parsley, ginger, carrot, celery
Fruit: Banana (mostly to mask the flavours of the veggies)
Seed: Ground flaxseed or hemp hearts
Base: Green tea or squeezed lemon juice
Powder: Vega in Chocolate flavor (half the scoop)

The recipes I use are quite simple and common.  If you are a busy person and always on the go, these take me less than 10 minute to put together.  I also like to experiment with tropical fruits or whatever fruits are in season (mangoes, dragon fruit, pineapple, pears, etc.).  Whatever tickles your fancy, throw it in the blender!!

Enjoy and Happy Juicing!!

Eat Your Veggies!! - Wifey's Top 5 Favourite Salads

Salad......what comes to mind?  Greens in a bowl with dressing.  BORING!!!

Salad is a healthy side dish to have with your main meals and a great way to get your veggies in for the day.  I absolutely love salad and I often have it with every meal, yes even breakfast.  However, it doesn't always have to be just greens and dressing, it doesn't even have to be vegetables!  Spring is here which means farmer's markets are in abundance of beautiful, seasonal fresh fruits and veggies.  It doesn't take a lot of time or effort to put together a salad and once you make it often enough, it's easy to get creative.

I absolutely LOVE salads and I usually make different variations with fruit and proteins.  But here are my 5 personal faves that are quick, simple, healthy, and yummy!!  I also make my own healthy dressings :)  Enjoy!!

1.) Breakfast Fruit Salad
Mangoes, bananas, berries, ground flaxseed, shredded coconut  (I usually use fruit that are in season).
Dressing: Plain greek yogurt with ground cinnamon

2.) Chick Pea
Chick peas, kale, red bell peppers, red onions, celery salt.
Dressing: Balsamic vinegar and olive oil

3.) Tabouleh (Wifey's version)
Couscous, parsley, tomatoes, tossed in a bit of lemon juice.

4.) Quinoa Salad (this one is my go-to if I have leftover meat)
Quinoa, edamame beans, avocados, leftover meat (salad in photo has leftover wild salmon), snap peas, cucumber, green onion, fresh dill.
Dressing: Sundried tomato or roasted red pepper with olive oil and lemon juice (this is where my magic bullet comes in handy)

5.) Cabbage Salad
Red and green cabbage, carrots, grape tomatoes, green onion, fresh parsley, cucumber, apples.  I usually add a hard boiled egg to the mix for some protein. (Photo below: I added some spaghetti squash instead of apples).
Dressing: Sesame dressing (sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar)

10 Things Jonathan Taught Me

Many say that parenting is all about what you teach your child, although I think most of the time, your kids do most of the teaching.  My 2 year old has taught us millions of things in the past 2 years and this blog will go on forever if I list every single one so below are my top 10!!

Enjoy and if you're a parent, you can relate :)

1.) Sleep is not a luxury, it's a God given miracle.
We are no longer in control of our own sleep patterns, he is.  But nothing beats the feeling of watching my child sleep peacefully, melts my heart every time, no matter how tired I am.

2.) Breastfeeding has given me a whole new appreciation for cows.
Having a baby suck on your boob for 45 minutes every 2-3 hours for half a year is very draining, literally.  Pair that with using a breast pump, I definitely felt like a dairy cow.  It was exhausting and I had sore nipples for months.  (Lovely, I know.)

3.) Purse shopping.
Having a child has given me an excuse to buy new purses, specifically large ones.  Need room for those diapers and toys!!

4.) Multi-tasking.
I shit you not, there were certain days when I would be breastfeeding, cooking, and talking on the phone, all at the same time.  Proud mommy moment.

5.) Baby wipes are freaking amazing.
Not just for wiping poopy bums, they get anything off of everything.  Puke on the couch? No problem!! Baby wipe that shiznat!!

6.) Privacy in the bathroom.
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

7.) His smile and cuddles just makes everything 200% better.
No matter how crappy my day is, Jonathan always has a way of reminding me not to sweat the small stuff.

8.) Kids songs.
The hubby and I have memorized all the words to every kid song known to man.

9.)  Toddlers have a sick sense of humour.
Jonathan seems to find it hilarious every time I'm angry or frustrated.  He also finds it funny to make a mess AFTER I clean up and look at me straight in the eye as he is doing this.

And lastly, the most important lesson Jonathan has taught me..............

10.) Patience.
From day 1 until they are out of the house, I will be mastering this skill.

LOVE THIS LITTLE MAN TO BITS!!!

Mama Stylez

Good evening beautiful ladies!!

After work today I dropped by the kitchen store to pick up a juicer and some utensils and I came home with shopping bags of new clothes.  Bad habit of mine.

Anyway, it got me thinking about mommy fashion; what looks good, what's in style, what makes you look like you're trying too hard, fashion no no's for moms, classic styles, affordable styles, etc.

After having my son, I tried to wrap my head around fashion and what clothing is appropriate for this new milestone in most women's lives, motherhood.  Through the years, society has created a standard that mothers should always dress modestly, in a manner that shows maturity and decency.

In certain aspects, I agree with this standard.  I've worked in the HFR (health, fitness, and recreation) industry since I was 16 years old (still do), and I've seen  my fair share of mommy styles, good and bad both on the pool deck and fitness floor.  I still remember watching the moms come in to drop off their kids for swim lessons and observing the different styles, thinking...."wow, I wish I would be as stylish as her when I have 3 kids!" or "wow, she has 8 layers of make up on and I can see her underwear!"

On the other hand, dressing modestly can be taken way too seriously and moms end up looking like this......

Well, not exactly but you get my point :)

When it comes to mommy fashion, I follow this guideline: "SIMPLE, CLASSY, & GLAM"
For this wifey and mother of 1, "simple, classy & glam" comes in 4 easy steps:

1.) Always have classic pieces in the closet that never go out of style.
That way you always have something to default to.  These pieces are also flexible enough that you can mix and match to experiment with a new style.  In the long run, it will save you money since you are already making use of what you already have, just dressing it up (or down).
- classic boot cut or skinny jeans (regular or dark wash)
- light cardigans and knit sweaters
- neutral and dark colours
- plain and basic tees and tanks
- 2 dress pants/skirts (dark and neutral colour)
- basic flats, heels, and boots

2.) Always accessorize.
Even if you choose 1 simple accessory, it will give your simple outfit (or even sweats) a little bit of glam or sparkle.  I am never without earrings, a watch and a matching bag/purse.
- earrings
- a good watch (splurge on this one and pick something that is not too flashy)
- necklaces
- scarves (cold weather)
- bags

Some mommies out there who are reading this are probably thinking, "Seriously? I don't have time to dress up an outfit everyday."

Seriously.....ladies, it takes less than 10 seconds to put on a pair of earrings before heading out the door.

3.) Splurge once in a while.
There are certain things I can cheap out on and others I invest my money into.  If I am going to wear it on a regular basis or often enough, I look for good quality and sometimes that comes with a hefty price tag.  I also splurge on formal and evening wear.  These splurge items include:
- watches
- bags
- shoes
- jeans
- coats

Otherwise, everything else, find bargains!!

4.) Don't Overdo It.
Yes, there is such a thing as too many accessories, too much makeup, too many bright colours, etc.  I pick 1 or 2 bold pieces and I just work neutral or dark colours around these pieces.  For example, if I'm wearing a statement necklace, I keep my outfit very very simple, otherwise I would look like an overdone Christmas tree.....or an 80's sofa. (Sorry, I wanted an excuse to post this picture haha!)

The image below shows a simple outfit and the purse being my statement piece as it has a lot of gold accents.  It's mommy friendly, comfortable, functional, stylish, not overdone, and doesn't scream out "28 yr old trying to be 19 again".

SO!! Mommies out there, don't be afraid to glam up your look once in a while.  Being a mother is the hardest full time job out there so might as well look good doing it!! There are so much more clothing and style options for us nowadays so if and when you have the time, look through some magazines, shop online, take a walk in the mall with the kiddies or read my blog (shameless, I know, lol!)

Have fun with it :)

Happy Shopping!!

Nailspiration by Wifey

Alright ladies, mamas, anyone and everyone out there that love nails.  Today's blog features my favourites!!

As a mom, I am all over anything that is quick, easy, and simple.  I absolutely LOVE doing my nails but simply do not have the time to sit and spend 2 hours on them nor  to go for a mani and pedi every week (simply because I feel a weekly mani is a waste of my money).  I do like to treat myself every once in a while to a mani and pedi, but usually for French manicures as I don't have the skills, time nor patience to them on myself.

Here are some tips and tricks that I personally use for quick, easy, and glam nails for the mom/gal on the go!! :)

1.)  HAVE A VARIETY OF SHADES & COLOURS.

I like to have a decent selection of colours to go with each season or outfit.  I'm not big into crazy designs or colours as I don't want to look like a 28 yr old trying to be 17 again lol!!  The shades and colours I have at home are pretty basic with maybe a few bold colours, which is fine because basic colours go with everything and I don't have to buy every single shade on the face of the earth (although secretly I do).  I personally like metallic shades or polishes with a hint of sparkle as it gives a punch of glam to my overall look and it doesn't look overdone or cheap.

2.) MY PERSONAL MUST HAVES.

Take care of your hands and nails!!!  With everything that I do on a daily basis, my hands and nails always end up dry and look beat up.  SO, the photo features my go-to products to keep my hands and nails moisturized.  And again, just put on and go and affordable!! (Vaseline hand and nail, Nail Envy by OPI nail strengthener)

I stock up on top and base coat.  This is the "secret" to long lasting nail polish.  It protects my colour from chipping (from everyday mommy wear and tear) and gives it that glam shine.  I buy a large bottle as I use it every time I do my nails.  (ProFX top and base)

Also, for those who are always on the go or going out for the night and want quick nails, invest in some quick dry shades and top coats.  It takes minutes to put on and dry pretty fast.  My favourite Pinterest trick is to dip my finished nails into ice cold water for a minute.  The polish dries almost instantly and you don't have to worry about denting or smudging.  (Sally Hansen Diamond finish quick dry top coat, any quick/fast dry nail polish)

3.) GEL MANIS, ALL DAY, EVERYDAY.

My best investment ever for nail fashion is my Orly gel manicure and UV light set.  It comes with a starter kit that has your gel coats, nail files, base coats, etc. and the UV light that sets your gel mani.  I LOVE gel manicures and I can have gel manis every week if I wanted to without spending the $$$.
This does take a bit of time to do but the end results are pretty good and has saved me money each month.  There are many other brands out there (Essie, Sally Hansen), this one has worked wonders for me personally.

So I hope this was helpful (or at least entertaining) and has given you a bit if inspiration to spice up your look.  I strongly believe that being a mom shouldn't stop you from glamming it up once in a while.

Enjoy!!

KISS Keep It Simple Stupid

On the road to my weight loss journey, many people asked.....
"how did you do it?"
"What are you eating?"
"Did you stop eating?"
"What are you doing differently?"
"Are you on that paleo diet?"
And the list goes on.

My response, "Regular exercise and a eating healthy".
Their response,"Really?? That's it?"

They couldn't believe how simple my answer was.  And really, it is very simple.  In the past 5 years, fitness and health has made itself a big fab in mainstream society. Crossfit, paleo diets, a million different protein powders, super foods, teas, "Strong is the new skinny", etc.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing any of these fabs, heck, I'm into some of them and they have worked wonders for me.  My point is that it has become the biggest "in thing" now that it has started to cloud over the basics of living a healthy life.

When I first started trying to lose the baby weight, I've tried I guess what you would call "diets".  I would eat less, cut out certain things completely, and worked out like mad.  Even tried different smoothies and protein powders.  I was determined to lose weight so I went all gung-ho and tried everything in the book. Big mistake. I gave up after a month, I lost my motivation and started giving into bad habits again.

It was not a sustainable change.

START SMALL

I started with 1 diet change.  My worst habit is not eating a sufficient breakfast.  I would get home late at night from work, pass out, then wake up just before I had to leave to he tetra sleep.  To me, a complete breakfast meant having to wake up earlier, so I was like "pffft, screw that! haha". So I would rush out, grab a coffee and a small pastry and off tomwork I go.  Hubby started making me smoothies every morning.  It was very simple, fruit, yogurt, and protein powder.  I invested in a $3 plastic tumbler with a lid and straw so I can have it while I drove to work.  It was a good start to my day.  It gave me energy and I didn't have a caffeine crash by 11am.  I didn't do anything else, just that. I kept my normal routine, the only change was the morning smoothie. I did that for a month, 2 months, 3 months.  To this day I still have my smoothie in the morning.  I am drinking one as I type right now.  It became a habit.  As the months rolled by, I slowly started building on that 1 change.  I added a short 3km jog/walk with the little one in two and I went during my days off.  That too became a habit and it was such an awesome way to put a 4 month old to nap!! Killed 2 birds with 1 stone, mama for the win!!  If you're a mom, you understand how excited I got. I did that for a month or so then I added another change.  Hopefully you see where I'm going here :)

As a busy working mom, this system worked for me.  It may work differently for someone else. Point being, if you bombard yourself with too much all at once (starting a diet, workout regime, all in one day), you will eventually feel overwhelmed and end up giving up too soon.

So start small and slowly build on it.  The little things make a huge difference, it will eventually become a habit and therefore sustainable.

Greetings!!

Welcome to my new blog!!

I'm very excited to share with you anything and everything about the things that I am passionate about.  Follow me on Instagram!!  @wifey604

A short summary about MOI:
Mom of 2 boys (the other one being my husband, hee hee)
Swim coach
Live in the suburbs
Currently studying to become a licensed paramedic
LOVE being active

What inspired me to start all this?

I've always been an active person, played sports in high school, worked out, etc.  After having my son, I felt that I've let myself go, and I think all moms can relate to this at some level.  Fitness went downhill, I didn't care about what I looked like, nor what I ate.  My little one was the center of my universe, it was no longer about me.
Shortly after mat leave, I started to feel the effects of "new mommy" stress.  Work life suffered a little bit, I had absolutely no energy or focus.  Home life, well, my husband an I arrive home from work, gobbled up whatever was in the fridge or bought take out, played with the little one for a bit before passing out. (Again, working moms, you know how this feels!!)
Wash, rinse, repeat......basically what my life felt like for 3 months.

So I took charge!!

It took one look in the mirror (and a few outfits that didn't fit anymore) for me to snap out of this stagnant lifestyle.  I spoke to a dear friend about this and his words still ring in my head to this day....... "If you don't take care of yourself properly, it will be hard for you to take care of your family properly."  As selfish as this may sound, there is much truth to this statement.  He compared it to the safety talk airlines give to passengers prior to take off, specifically regarding the oxygen mask...."please put your own mask first before helping children and/or the elderly".  To me, it made a lot of sense.  My family is my priority....how am I supposed to take care of them fully if I'm not taking care of myself? What example am I giving my child when he sees mommy eat unhealthy food?  It's the little things that add up.

ANYWAYS, 40 pounds later........

Long story short, I started a fitness routine with the help of my amazing husband/personal trainer extraordinaire.  Changed my diet back to healthy, whole foods and a year and a half later I lost all my baby weight plus a bit more.  I have tons of energy (which is absolutely necessary to keep up with a 2 year old boy) and overall I felt amazing and most importantly, happy.

My Blog

My goal is to simply share my passion with others, to inspire and motivate moms who feel that they too have let themselves go after having children.  Throughout all this, I've learned that being a mom is not an excuse to let yourself go.  Being a mom is one of the most amazing milestones in every woman's life, celebrate it by feeling happy, healthy, and looking fab!! :)
Don't believe me?
YES....you can still live a sustainable healthy lifestyle.
YES...you can still look and feel beautiful.
YES...you can still wear those heels and skinny jeans.
YES....go ahead, buy that red lipstick.
YES....that 21 year old boy, yeah he just checked you out.
BUSY?.....i'm sure you can spare less than 15 seconds a day to spit out 10 squats (more fun if you're holding a toddler)

I'm super excited and looking forward to providing you with fresh new blogs each week!!  Enjoy!!
